Vacation Time for Employees’ Wellness

by Soha Wellness Team

Employee wellness has risen to the top of corporate agendas. It is evident that well-rested employees are more productive employees. Integrating wellness approaches such as vacations creates a healthier and more effective working environment. Studies have shown that the lack of employee wellness can damage individuals and corporations. According to The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), employee vacations are beneficial for the individual but can also be valuable for the organization in terms of fewer sick days, enhanced productivity, and lower healthcare cost.

The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped life as we know it and redefined how we do business. Despite the enormous economic and social burden businesses have had to bear, the pandemic has started some positive conversations about issues such as employee health, inclusivity, and workplace flexibility. The pandemic has negatively impacted employees’ health and prompted many to switch to unhealthy lifestyles while turning to remote work. For example, a study carried out by Gallup researchers showed that 95% of UAE employees feel that integrating employee wellness activities can increase productivity and mindfulness in the workplace.

What can employers do?

Corporations in the Middle East are shifting towards accomplishing key considerations to secure business endurance, workplace productivity, and employee performance. Aside from being in a flexible working environment, employees are looking for a company that actually cares about them. The emphasis on wellness and inclusion goes beyond employee satisfaction and secures more efficient productivity. Employers are becoming proactive regarding their employee’s mental and physical well-being. One way to build a positive and productive working environment is to integrate corporate wellness programs into the company’s culture. A well-designed corporate wellness program can go a long way in helping employees adapt and overcome personal and professional challenges.

Another approach is enabling employee vacations; Gallup researchers also found that 35% of Saudi Arabian employees feel stressed at work. Today, employees are looking for a work-life balance regarding job opportunities. Employees are concerned that an overwhelming working schedule will not have space or time for self-care. Psychologists believe that short and frequent vacations can positively impact the well-being and efficiency of individuals. Some time off can accelerate creativity and fresh insight and reduce stress.

Corporate wellness programs often include a variety of group and individual activities customized to achieve company goals. Although hard work pays off, taking some time off can also be rewarding, especially in a hectic and demanding work environment. Well-rested employees tend to be more constructive when they get back to work. Companies are moving towards achieving long-term sustainability, employee wellness, and inclusion by incorporating flexible schedules and successful corporate wellness programs.
